The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) emphasized the critical need to control chemical contamination in agricultural raw materials, marking it essential for progressing the food industry. Speaking at the Bharat Chamber of Commerce event, FSSAI executive director Inoshi Sharma identified enforcing Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) in crops, fruits, and spices as a primary challenge. She urged for frequent audits and the rejection of non-compliant produce at farm gates.

Sharma highlighted the importance of educating buyers about the harmful consequences of excessive pesticide use, announcing plans to form a cross-ministerial committee to tackle this issue. Accurate labeling and avoiding misleading claims by Food Business Organizations (FBOs) were also stressed, advocating for a culture of 'Self-Compliance' with certified third-party checks to verify standards.

Bharat Chamber senior vice-president Naresh Pachisia commented on the repercussions faced by food processors due to chemical residues detected during crop production, including penalties and cancellation of export consignments. He called for heightened awareness and scrutiny regarding chemical use in agri-horticultural cultivation and post-harvest processes.
