Southern China Prepares for Super Typhoon Yagi's Landfall

Southern Chinese provinces and cities are bracing for the impact of super typhoon Yagi. Authorities have shut schools and postponed flights in anticipation of the storm's landfall along Hainan's subtropical coast. This could be the most powerful storm to strike China in years.

Yagi, noted for its maximum sustained winds of 209 kph (130 mph) near its eye, stands as 2024's second-most powerful tropical cyclone. The storm has gained strength significantly since it devastated northern Philippines earlier in the week, where it left at least 13 people dead.

Local authorities have raised the typhoon alert to the highest level, warning of torrential rains in Guangdong and Hainan. In response, several cities, including Hong Kong and Macau, have implemented emergency measures, suspending train and boat services, closing schools, and cancelling flights. Businesses and transport are expected to be heavily disrupted as the typhoon makes landfall.
