India is the world's leading producer of plastic waste, generating over 10.2 million tonnes annually, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Leeds, UK.

The study found that globally, 57 million tonnes of plastic pollution is created each year, with two-thirds coming from the Global South. This plastic waste finds its way into oceans and even human bodies, posing severe environmental and health threats.

Countries like Nigeria, Indonesia, and China also contribute significantly to this global problem. Efforts are underway for a legally binding treaty to address plastic pollution, with negotiations scheduled for November in South Korea.
