In an ecological disaster, around 50,000 trees spanning 500 acres in Mulugu district, Telangana were uprooted following a powerful gale and sudden cloud burst on August 31. Local climatic conditions are to blame, commented a senior forest official.

Officials noted that the shallow root systems of the trees made them more susceptible to being uprooted. The forest department is currently evaluating the damage and expects to complete the assessment in a fortnight after the ongoing rainfall subsides. No wildlife casualties have been reported though the forest is home to bison and spotted deer.

Telangana Panchayat Raj Minister Danasari Anasuya urged Union Ministers to send teams to investigate the phenomenon and requested special funds from the Centre to rejuvenate the forests. She noted that the damage could have been more severe had it occurred in nearby villages.
