Torrential rains in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have left 31 people dead, damaged roads and rail tracks, and submerged thousands of acres of agricultural land. The heavy downpour has disrupted daily life, resulting in power outages and leaving residents desperate for essentials. Rescue agencies are actively engaged in relief efforts.
On Monday, Telangana reported 16 casualties, while Andhra Pradesh, which bore the brunt of the rain fury, reported 15 deaths. In Andhra Pradesh, nearly 4.5 lakh people were affected, with districts like Vijayawada seeing severe disruptions. Local TV channels aired visuals of people pleading for help, with some stranded for days without drinking water.
The administrations are working to restore normalcy, but the damage is extensive. In Telangana, the preliminary estimates of the damage amounted to Rs 5,000 crore, prompting Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to appeal for immediate Central assistance and declare the floods a national calamity. Rescue operations and relief efforts are ongoing, with state officials emphasizing the severity of the situation.
