The Forest Department has initiated an investigation into the reported deaths of 18 to 19 monkeys in Chhattisgarh's Bemetara district, according to senior officials. Four decomposed carcasses have already been recovered.
A Panchayat representative claimed that two laborers, hired by villagers, shot at least 17 monkeys. He accused the Forest Department of attempting to cover up the incident. In contrast, a high-ranking forest official stated that the exact cause of death is yet to be established, although several suspects are under questioning.
'The incident purportedly took place on August 28 in Belgaon village when laborers fired shots to chase away the monkeys,' stated Sitaram Verma, a local Panchayat leader. Verma revealed that he had opposed the violent measures, citing religious sentiments attached to monkeys as incarnations of Lord Hanuman. The investigation, which includes a forensic examination of the remains, continues.
Divisional Forest Officer Chandrashekhar Pardeshi confirmed the ongoing search operation and stated that further actions would be taken under the Wildlife Protection Act against the culprits. The inquiry is still active, and the involvement of multiple parties makes it a complex case.
