Several non-government organizations (NGOs) in Dharavi have pledged support for the ongoing state government-led survey of informal tenants in Asia's largest slum. They accuse non-locals of spreading misinformation to stall the $3-billion redevelopment project led by the Adani Group.

The NGOs have written to authorities overseeing the Dharavi Redevelopment Project and Slum Rehabilitation Authority (DRP/SRA), expressing their support for the survey effort. Eight NGOs and citizen welfare associations involved in various social causes, including health and education, met with the DRP CEO to lend their backing.

Despite hurdles, the survey, which began on March 18, 2024, has completed over 11,000 tenements with plans to expand. Mapping the dense 600-acre area is vital for the redevelopment expected to take seven years. Eligible residents get a 350 sq ft flat, while ineligible ones will be rehoused elsewhere. The state government aims to ensure housing for everyone, marking a significant shift from earlier attempts.
