KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) MEC, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has emphasized the need for stronger social partnerships in addressing medium to long-term disaster responses and supporting affected families. His call came during the handover of a new home to the Jikela family, who tragically lost five members in the Durban floods of 2022.

The new house, a seven-bedroom residence, was constructed by the Mahlasedi Foundation, led by Pastor Bert Pretorius, as a response to the devastating floods. The floodwaters claimed the lives of Princess Bonakele Jikela, her children Yenzokuhle and Elimiyo, and the children of Princess Sindisiwe Jikela, Akhile, and Zekhethelo.

The Mahlasedi Foundation's initiative was supported by the Church of the Holy Ghost, which donated the land for the new home. The handover ceremony took place at the Georgedale site and was attended by Transport and Human Settlements MEC, Siboniso Duma, and Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL), Blessed Gwala. Both officials played crucial roles in coordinating the efforts of the family, the foundation, and the church.

MEC Buthelezi praised the Mahlasedi Foundation for their significant contribution and highlighted the importance of social partners in disaster management. "This clearly indicates the importance of social partners taking up some of the responsibilities often left to the government alone, particularly in finding long-term solutions to the needs that face our communities, especially in the wake of disasters,” Buthelezi said.

Prince Philemon kaTshelendoda kaDinuzulu, speaking on behalf of the Jikela family, expressed profound gratitude for the support provided. “The assistance we have received following the tragedy that struck our family is deeply appreciated. We are thankful to all who made this day possible, especially the Mahlasedi Foundation and Pastor Bert Pretorius,” he said.

The event underscored the value of community collaboration and non-governmental support in addressing the aftermath of natural disasters and aiding those in need.
