The Assam government has given the green light to an oil exploration project near the Hoollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, spearheaded by the Vedanta group, and has forwarded the proposal to the Centre for final consideration.

Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary explained that the State Board of Wildlife (SBWL) has approved this controversial project, which would take place approximately 13 km from the sanctuary, pending further approval from the National Board of Wildlife (NBWL).

The project's approval has garnered sharp criticism from environmentalists and political opponents. Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia questioned the government's commitment to environmental protection, referencing prior instances where the state was reprimanded for violating forest conservation laws.
