An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.2 struck off the southern Greek resort island of Crete on Wednesday, according to authorities. As of now, there have been no reports of injuries or damage.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute reported that the undersea quake occurred at 7:29 pm local time, situated between Crete and the islet of Gavdos, at a depth of 11.6 kilometers (7 miles).

The Fire Service confirmed that no initial reports of injuries or structural damage to buildings were received. Greek media noted that the tremor was felt across Crete, a popular summer tourist destination.

Greece is one of the world's most seismically active regions, making earthquakes common, though most are often not felt. Serious damage and fatalities are uncommon. A notable exception was a 1999 quake near Athens, which registered at magnitude-5.9 and claimed 143 lives.
