Firefighters have successfully brought a massive forest fire under control on the Portuguese island of Madeira, which had been ablaze for 11 days.
The fire, which ignited on August 14, scorched over 5,000 hectares of mainly mountainous terrain. Despite this progress, authorities have confirmed they will maintain a presence on the ground to ensure the fire does not reignite.
The battle against the flames was complicated by adverse weather, including high temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity. EU authorities provided two Canadair planes to assist in extinguishing the blaze, which fortunately resulted in no injuries, torched houses, or damage to essential infrastructure.
