An unusual cold weather system from the Gulf of Alaska interrupted summer along the West Coast on Saturday, bringing snow to Washington state's Mount Rainier and a national park in Northern California, leading authorities to close part of a highway that runs through the park.

Highway 89 through Lassen Volcanic National Park in California was closed after about three inches of snow fell overnight. The National Weather Service shared photos of snow-covering peaks and landscapes.

Unprecedented August snowfall also affected Minaret Vista and Mammoth Mountain, with authorities warning hikers and campers to prepare for slick conditions. Despite causing disruptions, the early hint of winter was welcomed by ski resorts.
