Humanitarian aid is on its way to assist areas of Sudan facing famine amid a protracted conflict, as announced in a joint statement by a group of countries and the United Nations on Friday.

The announcement concluded more than a week of Geneva talks aimed at reducing the conflict, although the talks failed to unite the warring factions.

Experts warn that 25.6 million people, over half of Sudan's population, face severe hunger. Aid trucks are currently heading to provide relief in Darfur, but challenges remain due to ongoing conflict and recent flooding.
