Eruption Alert: Iceland's Volcano Spews Lava Evacuating Nearby Spa
An Icelandic volcano erupted again, forcing the evacuation of a luxury spa. The eruption caused fountains of lava visible at night. The flow slowed but extended the volcano fissure. Gas pollution warnings were issued, but nearby towns and air travel remained unaffected.
A volcano in southwestern Iceland spewed lava and smoke for a second day on Friday, according to the country's meteorological office. The eruption led to the evacuation of a nearby luxury spa resort.
Fountains of glowing molten rock illuminated the night sky after Thursday's eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula. The flow from the volcano has since slowed, reported Rikke Pedersen, head of the Nordic Volcanological Centre.
The fissure in the volcano expanded significantly by Friday. The nearby Blue Lagoon spa, a major tourist attraction, was evacuated and remained closed. However, nearby Grindavik town was not directly impacted, and air traffic in and out of Keflavik Airport continued normally, authorities confirmed.
