The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been notified by the Russian Federation that fragments of a drone were discovered near the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. The remains were reportedly found approximately 100 meters from the plant’s spent fuel storage facility. The drone was reportedly neutralized early in the morning on August 22, 2024.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi announced that he will personally visit the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant next week to assess the situation. During his visit, Director General Grossi will evaluate the nuclear safety and security conditions at the site and discuss any necessary follow-up actions.

“Military activity near a nuclear power plant poses a significant risk to nuclear safety and security. My visit to the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant will allow us to independently assess the situation in a timely manner,” Director General Grossi said.
