Rescue efforts in Sicily are underway for six individuals, including British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, following the sinking of the luxury yacht 'Bayesian' during a violent storm. The yacht, which was carrying 22 passengers, sank near Porticello, leading to the death of one person so far. Search continues amidst challenging weather and underwater conditions.
Rescue teams in Sicily have resumed the search for six people, including British tech figure Mike Lynch and his daughter, after the luxury yacht 'Bayesian' was engulfed by a violent storm and sank, resulting in one confirmed death.
The British-flagged 56-meter sailboat was anchored off Porticello's port and carried 22 individuals when it faced ferocious weather. Among the missing are Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and lawyer Chris Morvillo, who represented Lynch in a U.S. trial, along with their wives.
'The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,' Salvatore Cocina, head of civil protection in Sicily, informed Reuters as prosecutors opened an investigation. Specialist divers reached the yacht at a depth of 50 meters, but found their access hindered. Meteorologist Luca Mercalli noted the extreme storm could be tied to rising Mediterranean sea temperatures.
