The Tawa Reservoir in Madhya Pradesh's Narmadapuram district has been officially notified as a Ramsar site, marking it as a wetland of international importance. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday.

Yadav announced the achievement on social media, stating, "Another achievement for Madhya Pradesh. Tawa Reservoir becomes Ramsar site." He emphasised the pride this recognition brings to both India and Madhya Pradesh.

Highlighting the role of the nation in conservation efforts, Yadav added that the people of Madhya Pradesh, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, are committed to preserving wetlands and the environment.

The Tawa Reservoir, created by a dam on the Tawa river, the largest tributary of the Narmada river, joins other prominent Ramsar sites in the state, including Bhopal's Upper Lake and Indore's Sirpur Lake.

The Ramsar Convention, an international agreement for wetland conservation and wise use, was signed in Ramsar, Iran, on February 2, 1971. India signed on to the convention on February 1, 1982.
