Sudan Floods Exacerbate Crisis: UNHCR Warns of Famine and Displacement

The United Nations refugee agency stated on Friday that floods in Sudan are hampering the delivery of aid to regions where residents are already battling hunger and famine, such as a camp in North Darfur harboring displaced individuals.

At least 11,000 people, many already displaced, are affected by the heavy rains and flooding, according to the agency.

Since the conflict began more than a year ago between the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Sudan has been engulfed in a severe humanitarian crisis. The western provinces, including North Darfur and Darfur, have witnessed the worst violence and displacement. A July report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) confirmed that parts of North Darfur, particularly Zamzam camp, are experiencing 'the worst form of hunger' known as IPC Phase 5. The report pointed to conflict and restricted humanitarian access as major contributors. In Al Fasher alone, 320,000 people have been displaced since mid-April, with about 150,000 moving to Zamzam camp, now hosting over half a million people.

The UNHCR emphasized the growing humanitarian needs, stating that the region's plight has reached epic proportions. Heavy seasonal rains and rising floodwaters continue to devastate parts of Sudan, with more storms forecasted. Local media reported 17 flood-related deaths in Abu Hamad, where 3,000 homes were destroyed. The Sudanese Red Crescent called for urgent government intervention and community solidarity to assist those affected.
