Residents of Wayanad, particularly from the worst-hit villages like Chooralmala, are still grappling with the traumatic events of the night of July 30.
Ubaid, a survivor, recounted his horrifying ordeal of waking up to water rushing into his house as he attended to his feverish children. Strong currents swept him away, and he woke up injured in a farm one and a half kilometers from his home. His wife was also found near the same farm.
Tragically, Ubaid's mother-in-law and a child were lost in the incident. His 11-year-old daughter, however, managed to save herself by clinging to a ceiling fan until the water receded and neighbors could rescue her.
Officials reported that the death toll from the devastating landslides in the Mundakkai and Chooralmala areas of Wayanad on July 30 has risen to 226, with 138 people still missing.
