Initially, the quake was measured at a magnitude of 6.9 by NHK. Following the tremor, authorities issued advisories warning of a one-meter high tsunami targeting the Pacific coastline of Kyushu and Shikoku islands.

In Miyazaki prefecture located on Kyushu, waves reaching 20 centimeters were recorded, according to NHK.
