Italy Takes Action Against Blue Crab Invasion
Italy has appointed a special commissioner to address the invasion of the aggressive blue crab species, which threatens the country's lucrative clam production. This invasive species, originating from the western Atlantic, has caused an estimated 100 million euros in damages and poses a risk to the marine ecosystem.
Italy has taken decisive action against the invasive blue crab species by appointing a special commissioner to curb the spread of this aggressive predator. The blue crab, originating from the western Atlantic, has significantly impacted local clam populations, particularly in the Po river delta.
Efforts to control the population through large fishing campaigns have been largely unsuccessful. Experts suggest that the blue crabs likely arrived via shipping bilge water. However, the rapid proliferation of these crabs could potentially be linked to climate change, according to various environmental specialists.
Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida highlighted the economic and ecological threats posed by the blue crab at a news conference. The blue crab invasion has already caused approximately 100 million euros in damage and severely impacted clam production in the northern regions of Veneto and Emilia Romagna. Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin expressed concerns about the species spreading to other parts of Italy, including the eastern Adriatic Sea.
