Tragic Boat Incident Off Syracuse: Two Dead, One Missing

Two migrants died and one is missing after a boat with over 30 people sank near Syracuse, Sicily. The coast guard rescued 34 people but one migrant died upon arrival and another in the hospital. Two migrants lost their lives and another remains missing after a boat carrying over 30 individuals sank roughly 17 miles south-east of Syracuse, Sicily, according to a statement by the Italian coast guard on Sunday.

After responding to a distress call late Saturday, a coast guard vessel and aircraft were dispatched to the location and managed to rescue 34 people, transporting them to the Syracuse port. Tragically, one migrant perished upon arriving at the port, and another later died in the hospital.

The search for the remaining missing migrant continues. The migrants aboard the ill-fated boat were of Syrian, Egyptian, and Bengali nationalities. U.N. data reveals that more than 23,500 migrants have died or disappeared in the central Mediterranean since 2014.
