The recent landslides in Wayanad, Kerala, serve as a crucial warning for Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Thursday.

Triggered by heavy rains, landslides in Mundakkai and other areas have claimed 190 lives and left over 200 missing. Sawant stressed protecting sensitive areas in Goa to prevent similar tragedies.

'A monitoring system will be developed to oversee hill cutting in the state, with identified hotspots,' he stated, adding that extreme rainfall and slope instability are major causes of landslides.

Sawant spoke on a motion by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, MLA Viresh Borkar, and BJP MLA Ganesh Gaonkar. Meanwhile, state minister Atanasio Monserratte said the Goa Disaster Management Authority is ready to support Wayanad relief efforts.

Monserratte indicated unplanned development in Goa heightens landslide risks, but mitigation steps are being implemented. According to ISRO's Landslide Atlas, Goa ranks among high-risk districts in India.
