The Goa State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has announced its readiness to assist Kerala in its massive relief operations following tragic landslides in Wayanad that have resulted in more than 170 fatalities, state minister Atanasio Monserratte confirmed on Thursday.
Triggered by torrential rains, landslides struck Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha hamlets early Tuesday, claiming the lives of 177 individuals, including women and children. The Goa SDMA has conveyed condolences and willingness to support to the collector of Wayanad via email,' Monserratte said.
Addressing queries in the assembly, state revenue minister Monserratte acknowledged that unplanned and excessive development in Goa, especially in Dharbandora in the Western Ghats, has increased landslide risks. He also noted that North and South Goa have been ranked 111th and 121st respectively in landslide exposure by the Landslide Atlas of India.
Detailing mitigation efforts, Monserratte said that development in ecologically sensitive areas is strictly regulated, requiring special permissions, and immediate measures have been taken to clear debris from recent minor to medium landslides, ensuring public safety.
