Severe rainfall and widespread flooding in Hunan Province, China, have led to the deaths of four individuals, according to state media reports on Tuesday. The infrastructure in rural areas has taken a hit, with numerous roads damaged and power as well as internet services disrupted.
The heavy rains, remnants of Typhoon Gaemi, have caused major dikes and dams to break and flooded large areas of farmland. The finance ministry has allocated 238 million yuan ($33 million) towards disaster prevention and agricultural aid. Experts attribute the rain to a combination of a southwest monsoon and Gaemi's outer cloud system.
The extreme weather has impacted nearly 90,000 residents in Zixing county alone, damaging around 1,400 homes and tearing up about 1,300 roads. Record rainfall levels have been recorded, and significant flooding has raised river levels, affecting major tributaries like the Xiangjiang River. Additional emergency funds are being mobilized as landslides have claimed more lives and other provinces activate their emergency plans.
