The death toll in the devastating landslides that struck Kerala's hilly Wayanad district on Tuesday has climbed to 23, state Health Minister Veena George confirmed.
Minister George reported that the bodies of the deceased have been recovered and are currently housed in various hospital morgues. Among the victims are four people from Chooralmala, including a child, and a one-year-old child from a Nepali family in Thondernad village. Three bodies, including that of a five-year-old, were found near the Pothukal village riverbanks.
Authorities have indicated that hundreds might still be trapped, although this has yet to be verified. State Revenue Minister K Rajan disclosed that over 70 people injured in the landslides are being treated in different hospitals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his concern and offered full support from the central government. In his post on social media platform X, he extended his condolences to the victims' families and those injured.
