The Durkee Fire burning in Oregon has become the largest active blaze in the U.S., with smoke affecting neighboring states. Authorities are bracing for a storm late Wednesday, expecting lightning, strong winds, and flash floods.
Burning near the Oregon-Idaho border, the fire shut down a key section of Interstate 84, a vital link between the states. The freeway reopened briefly on Wednesday, only to close again. Officials warned of frequent disruptions due to the 400-square-mile blaze.
The town of Huntington, home to roughly 500 people, stayed evacuated for a third day. Authorities issued storm warnings for those remaining behind, cautioning about wind gusts up to 75 mph, lightning, and heavy rain that could cause flash flooding. Nearly 500 firefighters have been mobilized, and Idaho Power warned customers to prepare for outages.
Over 60 significant fires are burning in Oregon and Washington. Smoke from the Durkee Fire is affecting air quality in Boise and beyond, leading to an air quality warning. Cooler air and strong winds could exacerbate the situation, making it hazardous.
