Taiwan Braces for Typhoon Gaemi, Curtails War Games
Taiwan curtailed its annual Han Kuang military drills and issued land warnings as Typhoon Gaemi approaches. Expected to make landfall on the northeast coast, the typhoon could bring up to 1,800 mm of rainfall in some areas. Transport disruptions and potential typhoon holidays are anticipated.
Taiwan curtailed its annual Han Kuang war games on Tuesday as Typhoon Gaemi barreled towards the island, prompting the government to issue a land warning due to the anticipated strong winds and torrential rain. Gaemi, the season's first typhoon to affect Taiwan, is expected to make landfall on the northeast coast between Wednesday night and early Thursday, according to the Central Weather Administration.
Currently categorized as a medium strength typhoon, it is expected to move across the Taiwan Strait and hit China's southeastern Fujian province early Friday. Taiwan's land warning focuses on the island's east and northeast, indicating the most likely landfall area.
In response, Taiwan has curtailed its Han Kuang military drills, including canceling fighter jet exercises. The transport ministry canceled all ferries to Green and Orchid Islands and four domestic flights, though international flights remain unaffected. Cities may declare a typhoon holiday, shutting financial markets, schools, and offices. The typhoon, having passed east of the Philippines without making landfall, is crucial for replenishing Taiwan's reservoirs after dry winter months.
