A severe storm that swept through Belarus over the weekend has resulted in six fatalities, the emergencies ministry reported Wednesday. The storm wreaked havoc across multiple regions, including Brest, Gomel, and Mogilev.
Officials said 330 cities and villages suffered damage due to the extreme weather, with fallen trees, wrecked cars, and homes without roofs captured on video by the ministry. The city of Mazyr, which houses a significant oil refinery, remains without electricity in some areas.
Deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Sivak described the situation as unprecedented. 'We have never encountered anything like this, when the energy system lost all the power generating and supplying all lines in the Mazyr region and surrounding areas,' Sivak stated. 'The wind was abnormally strong, leading to the destruction of high-voltage lines.'
