Rescue teams are working tirelessly to bring 53 coalminers trapped underground back to the surface after their pit in southern Poland was hit by an earth tremor, a company spokesperson reported. The tremor struck the Rydultowy mine around 0600 GMT, approximately 1,200 metres (3,960 feet) below ground.
Company spokesperson Aleksandra Wysocka-Siembiga revealed that 68 miners had been in the area at the time of the incident, and 15 of them have already been brought to the surface. Out of the rescued, 10 miners have been hospitalized and are in stable condition. "There are still 53 miners underground. The worrying information is that we do not currently have contact with two workers," Wysocka-Siembiga said.
Television footage showed helicopters and ambulances mobilized at the mine. Wysocka-Siembiga confirmed that more than 10 rescue teams are on site, continuing their rescue efforts.
