Delhi environment minister Gopal Rai announced on Tuesday the successful planting of two crore saplings in the city over the past four years, against a government-set goal for five years.
Rai revealed that the tree plantation drive will be expanded with an additional 64 lakh saplings of various species to be planted over the next year. Speaking at a press conference, Rai stated that the Delhi government and its agencies will launch this initiative from Narela on July 11, coinciding with the onset of the monsoon.
Emphasizing the crucial role of residents' cooperation, Rai mentioned that seven lakh saplings would be distributed free of cost to citizens as part of the campaign. Covering 30 assembly constituencies, the first phase of the campaign will run until August 9, focusing on raising public awareness and sapling distribution. To ensure accountability, a third-party audit will assess the survival rate of the newly planted saplings, with prior audits showing a 60 per cent survival rate.
