Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has called on Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to urgently address the debris removal from the Barapulla drain. In a letter on Monday, Oberoi highlighted the recent waterlogging issues exacerbated by construction material from the ongoing Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project.
'Heavy rainfall last week worsened the situation, causing drains in Central and South Delhi to overflow,' Oberoi noted, pointing out that areas like Nizamuddin, Jangpura, and Mathura Road were severely affected. She stressed the need for immediate action ahead of the monsoon season.
The city's plight comes as Delhi faces an 'orange alert' for heavy rains until July 3. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had previously set a June 30 deadline for drain de-silting, yet inspections by Delhi LG V K Saxena revealed incomplete work in multiple areas. Saxena has since ordered de-silting efforts to be expedited.
