India could see above-normal rainfall in July, except in parts of the northeastern region, announced the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday.

During a virtual press conference, IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra detailed that the country is likely to receive more than 106 percent of the long-period average rainfall of 28.04 cm this month. He noted that 'normal to above-normal rainfall is anticipated over most parts of the country, excluding many parts of northeast India and sections of the northwest, east, and southeast peninsular regions.'

The IMD also forecasted that maximum temperatures would likely be normal to below normal in several parts of northwest and south peninsular India, except for the west coast. Meanwhile, above-normal maximum temperatures are predicted over many regions of central, east, and northeast India, including the west coast.

Minimum temperatures are expected to be above normal across much of the country, with exceptions being parts of northwest and central India, and certain southeastern pockets.

Mohapatra expected robust monsoon rains for July, attributing higher minimum temperatures to cloudy conditions. Notably, northwest India recorded its hottest June since 1901, with a mean temperature of 31.73 degrees Celsius.
