In a significant development for international space cooperation, NASA administrator Bill Nelson has confirmed that the US space agency will expand its collaboration with India. This initiative will include a historic joint mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS), featuring an astronaut from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Nelson's comments followed a strategic dialogue between US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. According to a fact sheet released post-dialogue, plans are underway to commence advanced training for ISRO astronauts at NASA's Johnson Space Center.

"Building on my visit to India last year, NASA continues to further the United States and India initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology for the benefit of humanity. Together we are expanding our countries' collaboration in space, to include a joint effort aboard the International Space Station with an ISRO astronaut," Nelson wrote on social media platform X.

While specific mission details are still in development, this effort aims to support future human spaceflight and enhance life on Earth. Nelson emphasized that these joint ventures signify a significant milestone in the India-US space partnership.

In New Delhi, Sullivan and Doval's discussions concluded with the finalization of a Strategic Framework for Human Spaceflight Cooperation. This agreement is designed to deepen space interoperability and pave the way for the advanced training of ISRO astronauts in the US.

Both leaders highlighted the upcoming launch of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite, intended to map the Earth's surface biweekly to tackle climate change and other global challenges. Additionally, they unveiled a series of transformative initiatives aimed at bolstering India-US collaboration in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, critical minerals, advanced telecommunications, and defense space.

The Increased Cooperation in Emerging Technologies (iCET) initiative was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden in May 2022, and this latest dialogue underscores its ongoing progression.

Sullivan's visit to Delhi, accompanied by a delegation of senior US government officials and industry leaders, marks the first high-level engagement since the Modi administration's third-term victory.
