On World Environment Day, two iconic figures—Hello Kitty and Frankie the Dino—have joined forces to issue a powerful call for climate action in a unique global character summit. The collaboration marks the first meeting between Hello Kitty, the beloved character from Japanese entertainment company SANRIO, and Frankie the Dino, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) climate ambassador. They launched a special video titled "Will Humans Go Extinct!? Frankie the Dino Came to See Hello Kitty!"
The video was filmed during Frankie the Dino’s visit to Japan in April, where he served as the UNDP’s special envoy to advocate for climate action. During this visit, Frankie met Hello Kitty to discuss the urgent climate crisis facing humanity. Using simple language and relatable examples, Frankie emphasized the gravity of the situation and encouraged Hello Kitty to take her first step toward climate action by discussing the issue with her family and friends, reinforcing his key message: “Don’t choose extinction.”
This engaging video will be available on the "HELLO KITTY CHANNEL" and the UNDP YouTube channels in both English and Japanese. The goal is to engage young audiences in climate action by highlighting the interconnected nature of climate change with issues such as food security and biodiversity. The video also stresses the importance of adhering to the Paris Agreement's target of limiting the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. As the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement approaches, the video calls for urgent and concrete climate action.
Frankie the Dinosaur has become a powerful symbol of climate action since the launch of the UNDP’s "Don't Choose Extinction" campaign in 2021. The campaign's hallmark film features a computer-generated Utahraptor addressing the General Assembly Hall, urging humanity to stop making excuses and start addressing the climate emergency. This impactful message has reached over 2.2 billion people worldwide. Since the campaign's inception, a life-like Frankie the Dino has traveled the globe, inspiring people to take climate action.
Hello Kitty has been a dedicated partner of the United Nations since 2019, supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through her YouTube channel "HELLO KITTY CHANNEL." In 2023, she collaborated with UNDP to release two videos focusing on SDG Goal 13: "Take concrete action to combat climate change: Let’s learn with Kitty!" as part of her #HelloGlobalGoals initiative.
The new video featuring Hello Kitty and Frankie the Dino underscores the urgency of climate action and aims to mobilize young people around the world to become advocates for a sustainable future.
