The United States has given an assurance to Ghana that it will provide assistance in deepening the West African country’s democracy and mainly combating the issue of political vigilantism.

Stephanie Sanders Sullivan, the current US ambassador to Ghana pledged the commitment of the US government to assist Ghana to deepen its democracy, good governance, the justice delivery system, peace and security. She also praised Ghana for its involvement in enhancing peace in other parts of the world, but urged Ghana not to ‘export all her peace at home’ by guarding against certain tendencies that has the potential to derail the country’s track record as an oasis of peace in the sub-region, as reported by Graphic Online.

The 60-year old ambassador was in Tamale, Ghana on March 13 to have a three-day working visit in the region. She, on the other hand, also had a meeting with Mayor of Tamale, Musah Superior at his office. She reportedly mainly discussed the priority areas the US government was partnering with the government of Ghana to boost the socio-economic development in the country.

Even Security expert and former Director of the Bureau of National Investigations, Kofi Bentum Quantson, has underscored the requirement for political vigilantism to be tackled ‘boldly and sincerely’, noting the phenomenon poses a national security threat.
