In a worrying turn of events, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been transferred to a hospital in Iran, following a drastic deterioration in her health condition, which includes a severe cardiac crisis.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which honored her with the 2023 prize for her advocacy in women's rights and anti-death penalty work, expressed deep concern after reports revealed she suffered a heart attack while in prison. At 50, Mohammadi was already serving a sentence for her activism when this health emergency emerged.
The foundation run by her family stated that her condition necessitated this emergency transfer, warning it may be too late. Despite international appeals for her release, Mohammadi faces an additional 7-1/2-year sentence. Her family is urging the immediate dropping of all charges tied to her peaceful human rights efforts.
