The African National Congress (ANC), the country's largest political party, usually faces challenges during these local polls. Voter resentment often centers around declining infrastructure, including worsening road conditions and water supply issues.
During the 2021 municipal elections, the ANC captured less than half of the votes, marking a significant shift since the end of apartheid in 1994. This outcome hinted at their defeat in the national election of 2024, which resulted in the ANC forming a coalition government while Ramaphosa retained the presidency.
