Political Clashes Erupt Over Kolkata's Identity

In a sharp rebuke, TMC Rajya Sabha leader Derek O'Brien took aim at Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday for his contentious remarks about Kolkata. Shah had described the West Bengal capital as 'a city of slums' during a campaign speech in Dum Dum, prompting O'Brien to label him a 'political tourist'.

The Trinamool Congress reacted strongly, branding Shah's comments as 'Bangla-birodhi' or anti-Bengal. The party highlighted Kolkata's numerous accolades, such as being the 'City of Joy' and the 'Cultural Capital of India', in an effort to counter Shah's disparaging remarks. TMC contended these comments revealed BJP's dismissive attitude towards the state.

Further escalating the political rhetoric, Shah accused the current TMC government of indulging in vote-bank politics by settling infiltrators in the area. He urged voters to back the BJP to rid West Bengal of infiltrators and reclaim Kolkata's glory, a move that has deepened the fissure between the two parties.
