Greens Triumph in Baden-Wuerttemberg: Power Shift in German Politics
The Green Party has secured victory in Baden-Wuerttemberg's state election, marking a significant political shift by teaming up with Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservatives. Despite the Greens' success, the AfD solidified its position as a major opposition party across Germany, while Merz faces growing dissatisfaction at the federal level.
In a political shake-up, Germany's Green Party emerged victorious in the Baden-Wuerttemberg state election, securing a coalition with Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservatives, according to initial forecasts released Sunday evening.
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) finished third, reinforcing its role as the main opposition party even outside eastern Germany. Early results by public broadcaster ARD placed the Greens at 32% of the votes, trailed by the Christian Democrats (CDU) at 29%, and AfD at 17.5%.
Amidst a decline in support, Merz's coalition partners, the Social Democrats, garnered just 5.5%. Baden-Wuerttemberg, a hub for Germany's auto industry, faces economic challenges from rising competition in China's electric vehicle market.
