NSCN-IM Stands Firm: The Battle for Naga Identity

The NSCN-IM reaffirms its stance on the non-negotiable demand for a separate Naga national flag and constitution. Despite long-standing negotiations and a ceasefire established in 1997, the central government's inability to meet these terms continues to elongate the peace process. Veteran leader VS Atem declared this during a gathering in Manipur.

The NSCN-IM reiterated its steadfast demand for a separate Naga national flag and constitution, declaring these as non-negotiable. This firm stance was emphasized during a program in Manipur's Ukhrul, attended by the veteran NSCN-IM leader VS Atem, to honor the organization's general secretary, Thuingaleng Muivah.

Without an immediate comment from central government officials, Atem spoke on behalf of Muivah, who cited health reasons for his absence from public speaking. Atem reflected on Muivah's revolutionary journey that began in 1964, expressing his gratitude toward the Indian government and local administrations for facilitating Muivah's return to his hometown, Somdal.

The ongoing dialogue between the NSCN-IM and the central government, which commenced with a ceasefire in 1997, remains entangled over the demand for Naga sovereignty symbols. Though parties have engaged in over 70 rounds of discussions and an agreement in 2015, the absence of resolution regarding a separate flag and constitution sustains the impasse.
