India and Sri Lanka are on the brink of a landmark defence agreement, to be signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's forthcoming visit to the island nation. The pact is seen as a crucial move amidst China's growing military influence in Colombo.
In addition to the defence agreement, discussions between Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka are expected to lead to several other bilateral agreements, including one on restructuring Sri Lanka's debt. This visit follows Disanayaka's earlier promise to Modi not to compromise New Delhi's security interests.
The prime minister's visit, scheduled for April 4, comes as Sri Lanka's economy shows signs of recovery. The trip aims to deepen cooperation in various sectors, including energy, digitisation, and health, reflecting the enduring mutual trust and partnership between the two nations.
