Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has categorically denied reports suggesting the arrest of any journalist by state police. His clarification, posted on X, attempted to quash circulating media reports about the apprehension of a journalist, stating, "Assam Police has not arrested any journalist in recent times."
The controversy centers around Dilwar Hussain Mozumder, who was detained after questioning the alleged financial irregularities in Assam Co-operative Apex Bank. During a Cabinet meeting, CM Sarma questioned Mozumder's journalistic credentials, suggesting that claims of his professional affiliation might be misleading.
Amidst this, Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika and journalists from the Guwahati Press Club have joined the debate, demanding clarity on Mozumder's professional status. Protests have erupted, with journalists calling for his immediate release. While a local court granted Mozumder bail, investigations into allegations against him, including misconduct and attempted document theft, continue.
