Indian Parliament was abuzz with debates as Opposition MPs voiced concerns over US President Donald Trump's looming tariff threats. Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram called on the government to articulate India's stance, criticizing the lack of parliamentary discussion and consultation with opposition parties on this issue.
As Parliament deliberated on the Finance Bill 2025, Chidambaram cautioned that a trade war could result in reduced exports, lower foreign direct investment, higher inflation, and currency depreciation. He urged India to ally with countries like Canada, Britain, and Japan in averting a tariff conflict.
The debate saw a mix of apprehension and criticism among MPs, with some highlighting issues like trade tensions' impact on industries and demonetization's alleged failures. The government's stance, said BJP's Kunwar Ratanjeet Pratap Narayan Singh, would be clear only after tariffs are implemented post-April 2.
