Opposition Calls for Caste-Based Census in Gujarat Amid Government Pushback

The opposition Congress demanded a caste-based census in Gujarat under the Collection of Statistics Act 2008, but the request was denied by the ruling BJP government. Congress leader Amit Chavda highlighted the need for equitable resource allocation, arguing that lack of data leads to discrimination and inequality in budget distribution.

The opposition Congress has made a renewed call for a caste-based census in Gujarat, citing the Collection of Statistics Act 2008 as a legal basis. However, the BJP government in the state has rejected this demand, asserting that it falls outside the state's jurisdiction.

During a debate on The Gujarat Appropriation Bill 2025, Congress Legislative Party leader Amit Chavda argued that such a census is crucial to ensure fair distribution of resources. He pointed out that some communities experience partiality due to a lack of relevant data on social, economic, and educational conditions.

Chavda also challenged the BJP's claim that only the central government can authorize such surveys, stating that the 2008 Act empowers states to conduct them. Despite being in control for three decades, the BJP has not implemented such a survey, he added. In response, Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai reiterated the state's position, denying the demand as beyond its authority.
