India and China are actively pursuing the mending of their relationship, which was significantly strained following the Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted that both nations can benefit by addressing their differences without escalating them into disputes.
During a discussion hosted by the Asia Society, Jaishankar remarked on the traumatic impact of the 2020 conflict, noting that the breaches of agreements marked a sharp decline in trust. He emphasized ongoing efforts to repair the damage done, including regular meetings with his Chinese counterpart.
Both countries have recently firmed up disengagement agreements for areas in conflict and are cautiously optimistic, with leaders like Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping engaging in talks to enhance bilateral ties. The focus remains on preventing tension at the border from derailing overall relations.
