The political climate in India heated up on Wednesday after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath referred to Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi as a 'namuna' or 'specimen'. The controversial remark, made during an interview with ANI, appeared to target Gandhi and the Congress, suggesting their actions were merely to prolong controversy over Ayodhya.
In his critique, Adityanath questioned the Congress' achievements over the past decade. He ridiculed Gandhi's 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' as a 'Bharat Todo Abhiyan', insinuating divisive intentions. This prompted a swift rebuke from Congress members, who emphasized Gandhi's efforts for social justice and condemned the suppressive tactics allegedly employed by the BJP during parliamentary sessions.
The issue further snowballed with remarks from other political leaders. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi accused the BJP of being rattled and overly defensive, while Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav added that issues of foreign funding were more beneficial to ruling parties than the opposition. Meanwhile, Congress figures like Pramod Tiwari and Sukhdeo Bhagat criticized the language used, branding it as indicative of political desperation.
