Agence France-Presse (AFP) is demanding the immediate release of its photographer, Yasin Akgul, who has been jailed in Turkey. Akgul was detained pending trial amid an investigation into protests following the imprisonment of Istanbul's mayor.
AFP Chairman Fabrice Fries, also the news agency's CEO, addressed a letter to the Turkish presidency emphasizing that Akgul was not involved in the protests but was merely documenting them in his capacity as a journalist.
The call for Akgul's release highlights concerns over press freedom and the treatment of journalists in Turkey, as international advocacy for his case continues to grow.
