Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has reiterated the state government's determination to proceed with the Mekedatu project across the Cauvery River, despite opposition from Tamil Nadu. Shivakumar expressed confidence in receiving favorable judgment from the court regarding the project's future.
Shivakumar urged cooperation from Tamil Nadu, emphasizing that the project holds greater benefits for them compared to Karnataka. His remarks came in response to Tamil Nadu Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan's claim that the project cannot proceed without consent from the downstream state.
The Mekedatu project aims to establish a balancing reservoir intended to provide drinking water and generate power, but Tamil Nadu opposes the plan, fearing it will reduce their water supply. Karnataka officials argue that the project will supply 4.75 TMC ft of water and 400 MW of power once completed.
