Canada's Defense Pledge: A Promise for Unprecedented Military Investment
Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to significantly boost defense investment if the Liberals secure the upcoming election. Facing U.S. pressure, Carney aims to enhance Canadian military capacity with new equipment and improved personnel recruitment, amidst threats to national sovereignty.

Prime Minister Mark Carney, on Tuesday, announced a major increase in defense investment should his Liberal Party emerge victorious in the April 28 general election.
Under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has frequently criticized Canada's defense spending, Carney committed to addressing sovereignty threats by pledging funds towards strengthening the military at home and abroad. The plan includes the procurement of new submarines, heavy icebreakers, and modernizing military procurement systems.
Although Carney did not specify financial details, he emphasized overhauling military recruitment and increasing pay for service members. Canada has promised to approach NATO defense spending targets by 2030. Recent polls indicate the Liberals may gain more seats than the Conservatives, possibly leading to a minority government.
